New additions to Rochester's fashion week
Rochester, N.Y. - Fashion Week of Rochester is expanding to five days this year, starting next Wednesday, and bringing some famous faces to town.
This year, something old is something new.
The event kicks off with a clothing swap at the Memorial Art Gallery that will offer a new take on consignment. For a $20 ticket and a piece of your wardrobe that you're willing to part with, you can walk away with a new item for your wardrobe during Wednesday's Switch and Swap.
"A lot of the clothing that has been donated from our boutiques has never been worn," said Chantiza Stern, a co-producer of Fashion Week of Rochester. "A lot of them still have tags on them for whatever reason. The color or the size wasn't right, and they're brand new."
A portion of the money raised from this year's events helps The Center for Youth. The center's director said the donation is coming at a time when the federal government's shutdown has stopped funding for programs to help homeless children.
"Fashion Week proceeds could actually keep our kids safe while this craziness is going on in Washington," said Elaine Spaull, the Executive Director for The Center for Youth.
Fashion Week will also provide a jolt in business for boutique owners like Joan Lincoln.
"The very first week that Fashion Week launched, I opened my store," Lincoln said. She is the owner of Panache Vintage and Finer Consignment. "So, for me, it was an unexpected gift and business has been phenomenal ever since."
Last year's event pumped $150,000 of profits into local businesses.
"We have had boutiques tell us they do better the week of Fashion Week and the week following than during the holidays, Spaull said.
Stores could see a bigger boost this year. The event's Boutique Crawl was moved to Sunday, so that shoppers can look for and buy items shown on the runway during Fashion Week events.
Fashion week is also adding some star power from the 80s.
Rapper Doug E. Fresh will emcee an event on Thursday, and rocker Tommy Lee will take the runway during an event on Saturday.
