Pastor honors murdered friend

Rochester, N.Y. - It's been a week since Jonathan Pender was gunned down in his Brighton apartment.

Police say Pender was shot and killed last Sunday by Matthew Fix - who then turned the gun on himself.

Friends and family believe Pender was killed because he was trying to help a friend.

Jonathan died protecting a friend from domestic violence, said Pastor Katie Jo Suddaby, a close friend of Jonathans, and he got in the way and the abuser shot him. But he was doing what he always did which was to protect and love his friends and take care of them and that work doesn't have to end just because his life did.

In an Ordination Service at the Immanuel Baptist Church in Rochester Sunday, Suddaby became a Baptist Pastor.

She plans to use this new role to help others like Pender from becoming a victim.

To teach them how to step in but not put themselves in danger, to teach them how to get their friends out of trouble but not get themselves into trouble while they do it, said Suddaby.

Suddaby plans to start classes at her church, Baptist Temple in Rochester, to train people who are friends caught in the middle of domestic violence what to do.

I'm honored that even though he can't be here for my big day he can inspire people to do what he did which is to love people well, said Suddaby. He's not just a guy who died for a girl, he's a hero.
