Purple boxes to help battered women, families

Rochester, N.Y. - Starting Wednesday, people all around the City of Rochester will see purple boxes in their communities.

So what are they for?

The Rochester Police Department and Alternatives for Battered Women, Inc. launched the purple box campaign Wednesday as a way to gather donations of new toys for families they serve.

The purple boxes will be in offices throughout the community, at East, West, and Central
Police divisions and at City Hall - 16 locations in all.

One in 4 women and one in seven men will be affected by domestic violence in their lifetimes. Over 70% of these crimes are witnessed by children. A simple gesture of providing new toys can help a child in crisis feel a sense of normalcy and hope.
