One stop: gas up and mail a letter
Webster, N.Y. Head to the Mobil gas station on Bay and Ridge Roads in Webster and youll find a store with convenience.
Inside, instead of candy bars, the shelves are stocked with letters and boxes.
This is pretty much a full-blown post office, said Frank Ranalletti, owner of the gas stations.
Two years back, representatives from the U.S. Postal Service asked Ranelletti if hed be interested in operating a Contract Postal Unit, which is a satellite post office placed in private businesses.
It saves money, but it also is an access question, How do we make sure our stamps, our shipping products are available? said Karen Mazurkiewicz, USPS spokeperson.
The USPS trained Ranelletti and his staff and provided the supplies.
Its as big, if not bigger--from a revenue standpoint--as the gas station itself, Ranelletti said.
Ranelletti says customers are still discovering this hole-in-the-wall postal unit.
This is the best thing to happen to west Webster in years, everybody here is so friendly they make using the post office easy, theyre like our neighbors, said Mary Anne Richards as she carried in a box of letters.
Mazurkiewicz says theyre constantly looking for new opportunities to create these satellite offices.
