UR student robbed near East Campus

Rochester, N.Y. - Rochester Police are investigating a robbery of a University of Rochester student that occurred Tuesday night, according to a department spokesperson.

Undergraduate student, Atik Ahmed told police he was leaving a restaurant on the 1200 block of Mt. Hope Avenue Tuesday around 8:45 p.m. A man came up from behind, approaching Ahmed and demanded money.

Ahmed handed over an undisclosed amount of cash to the man. The man later swung a knife at Ahmed, cutting him in the upper body, according to Campus Safety. Ahmed walked himself to Strong Memorial Hospital, which is several blocks away from Mt. Hope Avenue.

Its a little surprising to me that this has moved over the river to this side, said Greg Madejski, a graduate student at the UR.

Numerous assaults and robberies have been reported near the west side of campus, but police said no other incidents have taken place on its easy side this year.

The incident happened two blocks from the construction site of Collegetown, a major redevelopment off Mt. Hope and in front of the University of Rochester Medical Center.

That I think is one of the lowest crime areas in the city, said Mark Fischer, Deputy Chief of Public Safety with the UR. I think the Collegetown development is going to put even more people in the area. Greater people, greater lighting is going to equate to even greater security for folks.

We are working with the Rochester Police Department and the developers as we discuss how we are going to deploy security in that area over there.

Investigators are reviewing security footage gathered in the area and plan to interview the victim again, according to a police spokesperson.
