Air Force to help in Lake Ontario drone search

Fort Drum, N.Y. (AP) - The New York Air National Guard is asking the U.S. Air Force for help in finding a military drone that crashed into Lake Ontario.

A New York National Guard spokesman said Wednesday that the Syracuse-based 174th Attack Wing has asked the Air Force to send an aircraft to look for the MQ-9 Reaper that crashed Tuesday afternoon about 20 miles north of Oswego.

The drone had taken off from Wheeler Sack Army Airfield at Fort Drum in northern New York. A search by a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter and vessel was called off later Tuesday because of bad weather.

The drone is used by the 174th to train Air Force pilots who use it on surveillance and attack missions globally.

The cause of the crash is being investigated.
