Celebrating the "little guys"

Millions of Black Friday shoppers braved the long times and crowds but others opted for a different kind of shopping experience on Small Business Saturday.

I did no Black Friday shopping whatsoever, said Jeff Czajka who only shops local and held off on his holiday shopping until Saturday. I don't need the crowds, I don't need to get up that early, I don't need to go to the major retail centers.

I like going to the local businesses to spend my money there.

Chris Wiedemer, owner of Cooks World in Brighton, said shopping at small businesses is important to the local economy and the community atmosphere.

It keeps the dollars in the community and it helps keep people employed and it really helps celebrate what neighborhoods are about, said Wiedemer. Every neighborhood has its own feel, its own character and I think its important to keep those stores alive and well.

Wiedemer said business at his store went up more than 10% on Saturday and this is a trend he wants to continue throughout the year.

It's important to go support your local store but don't just do it today. Today is the celebration, but it's important to get out and see them (small businesses) more than once a year.
