Man in critical condition after fiery wreck

Rochester, N.Y. -- An Albany area man is in critical condition following a high-impact crash on Broadway in Rochester Wednesday evening.

According to Rochester Police, a 43-year-old man from Menands, N.Y. was driving at a high rate of speed, the wrong way down Broadway, and struck a sign fastened to two poles. The car sheered the sign and threw it 150 feet down the road.

The car then struck a tree in front of the School Without Walls when it came to rest.

Officers Matt Lebeda, Whitney Celentano, Gary Wegman and Matt Cushman responded to the vehicle with heavy damage and fully engulfed in flames.

After the officers broke the windows, they were able to get the semi-conscious man out of the car with the help of the Rochester Fire Department.

The man was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital where he is in the burn unit with severe burns.

Officers involved were treated for smoke inhalation.
