Tips for staying safe this holiday season

Rochester, N.Y. Attorney General Eric Schneiderman has issued a consumer alert for consumers and seasonal workers during the holiday season.

As the holiday shopping season kicks off this week, shoppers should be wary of so-called sales that are often too good to be true, Schneiderman said in a statement. Consumers should know exactly what theyre entitled to in order to ensure that theyre getting the best deal for their money.

Schneiderman has offered tips for consumers and seasonal workers on how to be aware of how they are impacted by the holiday shopping season.

For consumers, Schneiderman suggests being aware of refund policies, added fees, and being mindful of the websites consumers visit. Following these tips can help consumers save money and avoid scams.

Seasonal workers are also offered tips in order to protect their rights as workers during the holidays.

Many retail stores hire extra workers during the holidays in order to help with the large crowds and longer store hours.

Schneiderman suggests knowing the minimum wage and overtime laws in your state, and being aware of the conditions in which you work.

Its important for people picking up part-time work this holiday season to understand their rights and make sure they are safe and protected, Schneiderman said in a statement.
