More teens abusing hand sanitizer

Syracuse, N.Y. - The number of teens in our region getting sick after drinking hand sanitizer is on the rise.

Teens are using it to experiment, and drinking it to get drunk.

The Upstate New York Poison Center reports a spike in calls about hand sanitizer use among teens, particularly in middle school students. The center, which is based in Syracuse, handles calls from the Rochester area.

"Unfortunately in children, not only do you get drunk from alcohol but you get hyperglycemic," said Michele Caliva of the Upstate New York Poison Center. "That means you drop your sugar, and can actually render someone unconscious."

Doctors say hand sanitizer contains highly concentrated levels of ethanol. While beer is about 7 percent alcohol, hand sanitizer is 60 percent alcohol.
