The City of Canandaigua's smoking ban

Canandaigua, N.Y. -- Starting in December no one can smoke within 100 feet of a playground in a city park or at the Kershaw Park swim beach area.

I take my grandkids to the playground, I would like it to be a decent place for them to go, said Shirley Reome who supports the ban. She lives next to a city park.

In December a new law will go into effect.

City councilmember Karen White, who introduced the ordinance almost two years ago, said it's similar to county laws.

Signage will be put up in city parks this winter.

Canandaigua resident Rebecca Schmeer supports the ban saying it will help with health and litter.

Depending on how many people smoke and how long they're doing that you can think about all of the butts that they have laying around and everything, said Schmeer. I know if I had kids I wouldn't want them running around and saying what is this? I wouldn't want that around my kids.

According to Canandaigua Police Chief Jon Welch, the law will be enforced on a complaint type basis.

The law will not affect private property, even if the property line falls within the 100-foot radius.
