Sex offender hiring prompts changes in Pittsford

Pittsford, N.Y. Town of Pittsford officials have ordered an investigation into their hiring protocols after a registered sex offender was mistakenly hired to work as an overnight janitor at the towns recreation center.

According to a town spokesperson, the person was hired before a background check was complete.

A New York State Department of Corrections official told 13WHAM that the sex offender told his parole officer about his new job and then the parole officer immediately contacted the town.

The town then fired the employee.

The town released this statement on Friday:

The person was onsite during program hours for a cumulative total of approximately seven hours, and worked for the Town for a total of eight days.

At no time did the person have access to any children; existing safeguards and procedures for accompaniment of children by members of the program staff were followed at all times.

Pittsford resident Lisa Cove says its troublesome that mistakes like this could be made.

Obviously a mistake is a mistake, Cove said. I don't know how it was overlooked, but it was. Luckily, someone caught it in time and that was good, but I guess I'm wondering how many other mistakes there are that nobody has caught and that's disconcerting.

Pending the outcome of the review, all hires will be reviewed and approved by a formal vote of the Pittsford Town Council.
