Q&A Winter Storm from Mark McLean

On Tuesday, Meterologist Mark McLean held a Q&A session about the Winter Storm. Below are your questions, and his answers.

Question from Sue:
The snow has already started here in Bloomfield. Isn't this earlier than what was forecasted?

Answer:
Slightly Sue, the expectation is that snow will start shortly for everyone. A quick 1-2" by mid evening (6-8 pm).

Question from guest:
how fast is the storm moving?

Answer:
It is a fast mover. The center of low pressure is still near the Gulf of Mexico. The storm center will pass close to NYC by midday Wednesday. Rochester will stay on the 'cold side' of this storm.

Question Chris:
On a scale of 1-10, how does this storm rate as far as Winter Storms go?

Answer:
If we use the scale that the 'Super storm of 1993 is a 10 for Rochester', and 'this past weekends lake snow was a 2' then I'd put this somewhere between a 4-7 depending on location. The higher values would be west of Rochester. Rochester a (5 or 6).

Question from Cookie:
What do you think the next 2 days will be like along the lake in Kent?

Answer:
Cookie, the lake enhanced snow on Wednesday will keep the snow going for you, even through Thursday morning. You will see totals around 10" by late Wednesday/early Thursday. Possibly a few additional inches into Thanksgiving morning.

Question from Eric:
Curious about what you think will be on the ground in Penn Yan and Seneca Falls in the morning. Road conditions? Deteriorating throughout the day?

Answer:
Eric, you guys will see 2-4" before you mix and possibly change to rain around midnight. The AM road conditions should be 'manageable'. By Wednesday afternoon lake enhanced snow will move back into the Finger Lakes and create additional accumulation.

Question from Chris:
Is there going to be a possibility of blowing and drifting snow and whiteouts as well?

Answer:
Chris, the wind shouldn't be a significant factor tonight, but it will increase Wednesday. Blowing and drifting may be more of a concern west of Rochester will slightly colder temps and slightly more powdery snow. The snow will also be blowing straight across west-east roads tomorrow which isn't an ideal scenario.

Question from Guest:
We are supposed to be traveling up to the adirondacks (far north) for thanksgiving. Our original plan was to get on the road early Wednesday morning, but with the "storm" news, we thought maybe wait until Thursday AM instead. However ,I see now that it is moving faster and may start earlier, so maybe wednesday morning will be ok once roads clear? I see that Thursday now looks like the coldest day, which may put us in more danger for ice on the roads. Any thoughts?

Answer:
It will be slow travel to the ADK. Wednesday morning may be your best bet, but it will not be a precipitation free journey. Generally, I agree that ice or snow accumulation will be more of an issue late Wednesday into Thursday as temps drop.

Question from Guest:
Hi Mark, can you predict when the storm will be past - or when we can consider ourselves to be "out of the woods?"

Answer:
By midday Thursday most areas should be 'out of the woods'. The lingering lake snow may last into Thursday afternoon, but accumulation will not be area-wide (more localized) at that time.

Question from Sharon:
It's now snowing in Geneva. How much snow should we expect in Geneva over the next two days?

Answer:
Geneva should see a healthy 4-6", possibly more if the storm track is further east than anticipated. Latest round of model data coming in doesn't suggest much of a storm track change.

Question from Patty:
Hi- we are trying to head downstate to NYC - when is the best time to leave I your opinion? Tonight? Tomorrow morning or tomorrow night?

Answer:
If you leave tonight to NYC you will encounter snow to at least BGM through 9pm. Tomorrow morning may be the best window, but you'll still see the poss. of a mix in the Finger Lakes with plain rain downstate. A real soaker too near NYC, a solid 2-4" of rain. Wednesday night will turn colder with more icing as temps drop.

Question from Torrey:
What about to Syracuse? Thurs AM not a good idea?

Answer to Torrey:
Torrey, lake effect snow will still be flying Thursday morning. The winter storm warning continues east of ROC in Wayne County until 7AM Thu.

Question from Tammy:
Hi Mark. We live near the lake in Hamlin. Do you predict more snow near the lake and how much?

Answer:
Tammy, the lake will be the 'wild card' for you. I'd expect the snow in Hamlin to last through Thursday morning. Maybe a good 8-10" as a best estimate. Possibly lower if the mix line moves into western Monroe County tonight.

Traveling from Geneva to Pittsburgh, PA Thursday around 8 am. Thruway to 79 South I believe. Expecting road conditions to be decent by then ... safe assumption?

Answer:
Travel to Pittsburgh on the Thruway will encounter some lingering lake effect snow. 79 South should gradually improve into PA.

Question from T:
What totals do you think W. Irondequoit will get?

Answer:
T, West Irondequoit will see the possibility of 6-9". Maybe more if the rain/snow line doesn't reach you.

Question from Anne:
Hi Mark, hope this isn't a duplicate....love this live chat. Son and niece coming from Buffalo tomorrow night after work. What are the weather predictions for Buffalo, should they wait til Thursday to travel?

Answer:
Anne, thank you! Travel Wednesday night or early Thursday will be very similar. Lake snow expected. I find its easier to travel during the day if snow is expected. Night travel is always more tricky.

Question from Vicki
Hi Mark, nice to chat with you, I job shadowed you in 2000. Anyway, we were thinking of going to my aunt's in Honeoye Falls on Thursday...what snow fall accumulation should we expect after the storm for that area?

Answer:
Hi Vicki! Hope you're well! I'm less certain for areas SE of ROC. I'd keep a larger range open in the Finger Lakes. Maybe 6-10". My gut tells me to go with the lower number. Time will tell.

Question from Guest:
Honeoye falls what we looking at?

Answer:
Light snow tonight in HFL. May mix after 9pm. If it doesn't, expect totals closer to the city of ROC. Maybe 8-10" through early Thursday.

Question from Guest:
Driving conditions tonight around 7pm 104 Webster/Ontario?

Answer: Continuous light snow in Webster/Ontario around 7pm. Should be manageable, but slow.

Question from Amy:
We are supposed to be driving to Cleveland tomorrow from Irondequoit...how bad do you think this will be? Probably leaving tomorrow afternoon. Thanks!

Answer:
Amy, you may catch a brief window late Wednesday AM into early Wednesday afternoon near ROC. I'd expect snow to redevelop closer to BUF/ERIE/CLE.

Question from Roxanne:
Hi Mark, I'm leaving in about 1/2 for Alfred State, then coming back, How i 390, 36, 86 and 21 shaping up?

Answer:
Roxanne, light snow for each trip. Plan on extra time. Drive safe :)

Question from Guest:
How about conditions and totals in Canandaigua?

Answer:
Canandaigua will see light snow through evening. A mix may be possible overnight. This should hold totals down some. I'm thinking 4-6" through Wednesday night. If the mix stays east of you, expect more. Watch for a bit of sleet/ ZR rain as well tonight.

Question from Tracy
Hi Mark...we planned travel weds night from roch to binghamton. I'm assuming the worst travel conditions will be then?

Answer:
Tracy, the snow will turn to more of a lake effect snow. Much more variable by that point. Temps will drop through the 20s with wind gusts into the 30s. Not great, but south of the Finger Lakes the snow should let up a bit.

Question from Guest:
Surely South Byron will be spared this winter stir-up?

Answer:
South Byron should see a solid 8". The lake snow may push totals higher Wed. night into Thu. AM.

Question from Tina:
How will travels be at 6 am tomorrow morning I drive from greece to victor

Answer:
Tina, the intensity of the snow diminishes and visibility should improve. However, I'd still plan on at least some light snow.

Question from Guest:
How about Buffalo, have son and niece coming from there tomorrow night. Should they wait til Turkey day? p.s. stopped snowing in Hilton

Answer:
Thursday morning may be a better bet from BUF to ROC. The lake snow continues Wednesday night east of BUF toward ROC. Snow should gradually taper into Thu. AM.

Question from Courtney
Should we be concerned about ice and/or blowing wind along thruway to 81, up to Malone, NY for a drive early tomorrow morning?

Answer:
Courtney, the Thruway to 81 may be slightly better than 104 to 81. Snow will diminish in intensity some through the morning.

Question from Molly
What do you think the roads will be like for the drive home from work today?

Answer:
Molly, light snow continues now and should continue this afternoon/ evening.

Question from Guest
how will newark fair in wayne county going to sodus thursday afternoon

Answer:
Newark will be on that fine line of snow/mix/rain. That should hold totals down some compared with areas west of ROC. Thursday afternoon should be good in Sodus, cold, but good.

Question From Lisa
Live in Henrietta and have a family function at 5 in penfield will it be bad then?

Answer:
Lisa, (Inside or outside) :) JK of course. Steady light snow. Should be manageable, but driving will be slow. Have fun.

Question from Guest

Question from Justin:
We will be traveling From South Byron to Scottsville via North Road on Thursday, late morning. Should we see much in the way of blowing or drifting?

Justin, It will be blustery with some drifting in open areas. At least the snow will be winding down then

Question from Sarah

Answer:
Sarah, some passing snow will be possible, but you should be out of the steady snow by Wednesday afternoon.

Question from Paul
Traveling to Albany tomorrow morning, best time to leave?

Answer:
Paul, the snow may still be steady pre dawn. 9 AM to 3 PM we may see a break from the steady snow. It wont be a snow free journey entirely.

Question from Ben
Will this hit us all at once or will it be a slow desent

Answer:
Ben, very long duration event that transitions from coastal storm to LE snow. This should help with from 'snow management' perspective.

Question from Guest
Do you think we will get a lot of lake snow in West Irondequoit?

Answer:
Maybe 4-6" of lake snow in West Irondequoit. Additional snow from the storm is possible as well.
