Wilmorite Chairman on Marketplace upgrade

Henrietta, N.Y. -- The Henrietta School superintendent is strongly opposed to a deal that would benefit Marketplace Mall. The school has no power to stop it but that didnt stop Dr. Kenneth Graham from writing a letter to try to block it.

The deal would freeze the malls property taxes for 25 years adding a 1% increase for each year.

Wilmorite, the company that owns Marketplace Mall, has also signed a lease for a new big box store as well as providing $30 million dollars with of upgrades to the mall.

Wilmorite Chairman, Thomas Wilmot, says it will generate more jobs and more sales taxes. Both would benefit the community.

I think weve been a really great corporate citizen, says Wilmot. Weve never gotten a penny from any government entity related to the Marketplace project. Its stood on its own two feet and it needs to be upgraded.

The new big box store could be announced as soon as Monday.

A public hearing, where residents can weigh in on the tax deal, is also scheduled for Monday.

Upgrades will begin in January.
