Excitement over downtown Tops talk
Rochester, N.Y. - News that Tops Friendly Markets plans to add a downtown Rochester store has created quite a buzz in the city.
It would be great, there's nothing downtown you know for grocery shopping and it would probably help out a lot of people on the bus line, said Tracy Clemons, a city resident.
Tops has not set a deadline for its location or store construction. Tops CEO Frank Curci said not to expect a new store in 2014, but said one is coming.
A grocery store would be a pretty exciting thing I think you would have 6,000 city residents jumping up and down saying, great, I can walk, said Heidi Zimmer-Meyer, President of the Rochester Downtown Development Corporation. The walkability aspect is part of what draws people to downtowns like what we have developing down in Rochester.
The downtown population has doubled since 1980 and is expected to grow by 1,600-1,700 people within three years, according to Zimmer-Meyer.
Tops operates store on West Avenue, Upper Falls Boulevard, and North Winton Road.
Wegmans operates one Rochester marketthe newly built store on East Avenue.
