Murder indictment for NY mother in baby death
New City, N.Y. (AP) - A suburban New York woman accused of strangling her newborn son and dumping his body has been indicted on a murder charge.
The Rockland County district attorney announced the development Friday in the case of Maria Oliva Guaman-Guaman (GWAH'-mihn GWAH'-mihn).
The 23-year-old Guaman-Guaman was arrested last week in Spring Valley. The police chief said she confessed to the killing.
The county public defender's office did not immediately return a call seeking comment Friday.
The mother is accused of killing the baby and leaving his body in a recycling bin shortly after giving birth last month in Spring Valley. The body was found Nov. 12 at a recycling center in Elmsford and traced back to Guaman-Guaman's neighborhood.
The district attorney said DNA evidence led to Guaman-Guaman's arrest.
