Dispute over Pittsford Apartment
Pittsford, N.Y. -- Its the largest development project in the Village of Pittsfords history and some people dont want it to happen.
The project, called the Canalside Project, would include up to 167 apartments. Restaurants are also included in the project.
People are objecting because theyre afraid of change, said Anthony DiMarzo, the developer for Westport Crossing. But when its done were sure that people are going to move in.
Can you imagine a building eight-times the size of the library and five or six or seven of them lined up, said Mike Reynolds. How can the village ever possibly like that?
Despite many years of debate and many years of approval, there remains a strong sentiment from many in the village that this project simply doesnt fit and that people dont want it. In the last election it was voted down 3 to 1.
Dont make special exemptions for large developers, says Justin Vliestra. I personally, Ive put in application for changing my basement windows and had them rejected. I think they can reject a four-story building thats grossly inappropriate for the village.
Today, the village board voted to bring in an outside consultant to determine if changes made by the developer require a new environmental review process.
A lawsuit from neighbors currently has the entire project stalled in court. The developers believe even the boards action today may violate a judges order.
