NYPD gets 1,171 new officers

NEW YORK (AP) - Nearly 1,200 new officers have joined the New York Police Department at the last police academy graduation of Commissioner Raymond Kelly's and Mayor Michael Bloomberg's 12-year tenure.

Bloomberg praised the graduates' varied backgrounds at Friday's Madison Square Garden ceremony. The new officers include immigrants from 45 different countries, about 460 people with college degrees and a few dozen with law or other advanced degrees.

The class is 56 percent white. But overall, the department has become more diverse in the last 12 years.

One graduate knows the danger of police work all too personally. New Officer Dina Loor is the wife of Detective Eder (EHD'-uhr) Loor, who was injured last year when he was stabbed in the head.
