Toll booths handing out red ribbons for MADD

As you travel on the New York State Thruway this weekend, you'll be reminded of the dangers of drunk driving.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving are teaming up with thruway officials in their latest campaign to end drunk driving.

Starting today, state thruway workers toll booths will hand out 65,000 red ribbons as part of the Tie One on for Safety Red Ribbon Campaign.

The reminder to stay sober this holiday season will also be featured across message boards across the thruway, as many drivers make their way home from holiday parties.

State police say they'll be working with local law enforcement with checkpoints and patrols as a reminder to drivers that there are consequences for drinking while driving.

"We need to partner with the community to do their share, Mark ODonnell, New York State Police. Be responsible, whether it's you being the designated driver or someone in your party."

The Red Ribbon Campaign is MADD's longest running public awareness project.
