Gearing Up for Winter Weather

Rochester, N.Y. -- A winter ice storm emergency has been declared for Upstate New York.
That has many people getting prepared around the state.

RG&E has crews ready to fix any power outages the weather may cause.

Our county is in a state of emergency and I anticipate losing power overnight and we want to have heat and be safe, said Mark Murray, who stopped at the Lowe's in Henrietta after picking up his brother from the airport. Murray lives in Potsdam and was buying a generator before heading home. We're all stocked up on everything else, we just want to keep our food fresh and our heat on.

Most people werent gearing up for winter weather, but rather finishing Christmas shopping Saturday.

We've got the advanced planners that are thinking about the potentials, said Kevin Klein, manager of Mayer Hardware on North Winton Road in Rochester. But I think people are generally trying to get Christmas under their belt.

Mayer Hardware is stocked up with ice and snow essentials.

Shovels, ice melt, anything to break up ice around the house, and batteries, flashlights, said Klein, who added his store has also received a number of calls about generators.

The potential ice could cause widespread power outages, which is why RG&E has crews ready to go.

We have to wait to see what nature is going to do, said Richard Meier, a spokesman for RG&E. Sometimes she hits us and sometimes she takes a different path. We are prepared we have different crews that we scheduled for weekends and other crews have been notified and contractors that we may need them.
