West Webster donation legislation passed

Washington -- The House of Representatives have passed legislation to help the victims and families of the West Webster volunteer firefighters who were ambushed in last years Christmas Eve shooting, Congresswoman Louise Slaughter announced Thursday.

There are no words that can heal the wounds suffered by Ted Scardino and Joe Hofstetter, and nothing we can do to bring back Mike "Chip" Chiapperini and Tomasz Kaczowka," Slaughter said in a statement. But by passing todays legislation we can help lessen their burden, ease their pain, and prove that even in our darkest hours, our country will be there to support our public servants, their families, and communities in need.

In the days following the attack, Western New Yorkers and people from across the country generously donated to the West Webster Fire Department to help these victims and their families.

Due to the IRS code, the WWFD has been restricted in its abilities to distribute the donations to the families.

Slaughter has been working on moving this legislation forward since the spring, when West Webster firefighters and their families alerted her to the issue.
