Flooding in Genesee County
Batavia, N.Y. - Melting snow and heavy rains have people in Genesee County waiting for water to recede Monday night.
Homes along the Tonawanda creek in Genesee County saw water rise quickly this weekend.
Roads are still closed and basements are flooded.
That little fire hydrant out there, yesterday water was so high you could only see the little green cap on top, said Lori Johnson, who has lived on Walnut Street in Batavia for over 20 years. She said they are used to seeing water rise. This is kind of early because it's December but you know, January, February, when we get a warm spell this usually happens we just had so much snow and it just melted so fast no surprise really.
But it was a surprise to some drivers who got stuck trying to navigate through the water Sunday.
It's been pretty much nonstop but manageable, said Captain Dan Herberger with the Batavia Fire Department.
The fire department had to rescue some people who were stuck in water logged cars, they helped evacuate about a half a dozen homes, and are continuing to pump out basements.
We're just waiting for the waters to recede in that area of town because as we pump water out of the basement it just comes right back in, said Herberger. The water is receding rather quickly in that area, so I think the weather and the cold temperatures and lack of rain has been helping us out for the last 12 hours anyway.
The dry weather has also been giving some relief to waterlogged homeowners.
