Deadline extended for health care that starts Jan. 1

Greece, N.Y. Monday night was supposed to be the deadline to go on New Yorks new health care exchange and sign up for insurance that begins Jan. 1.

Hours before the cut-off the White House announced it was extending the deadline to Dec. 24.

Should someone miss the new deadline, they can still sign up for exchange-driven insurance, but the plan would not begin at the start of the year.

Open enrollment lasts until March 31.

Craig Metzler, of Greece, was nervously trying to navigate the exchange website Monday.

He lost his insurance a month ago and says he has been unable to successfully obtain new insurance through the exchange.

At this point, hopefully it wont be that long, but theres going to be a lapse in coverage and its very worrisome, Metzler said.

While extraordinarily busy, the employees at Coordinated Care Services say helping people work through the website has been, for the most part, smooth.

Some are concerned with the price and concerned they cant afford it, but a majority people have been very pleased, Kim Wynn, of Coordinated Care Services, said.
