Costco's future uncertain

Rochester, N.Y. The future of Costco at the Citygate site in Rochester remains uncertain after an explosive meeting of the county legislature at 6:30 a.m. Friday morning.

The issue at hand was the childrens detention center on Westfall Road, which sits on property Costco needs in order to break ground in June.

The county legislature was debating a resolution, tabled by Republicans, to authorize $9 million in bonds for a new detention center to be built in Rush.

Republicans had wanted the detention center added to the capital budget for a vote.

We felt it very necessary to answer the question as to whether we can continue with this project by having it in our capital budget, Deputy County Excecutive Dan Delaus said. If we proceed without the capital budget being passed there are millions of dollars of taxpayer money at risk.

Democrats recently blocked funding of projects in the capital budget because they want an independent review of the LDC scandal.

Citygates developer says this political infighting puts the Costco project at risk.
