Work begins on canal wall in Fairport

Fairport, N.Y.- Work is underway on the reconstruction and rehabilitation of part of a wall on the north side of the Erie Canal in Fairport.

The New York State Canal Corporation said the 384-foot long segment is located between North Main Street and the intersection of State Street and Erie Canalway Trail in Fairport.

The Village of Fairport and its relationship with the Erie Canal is vital to the nearly $380 million in tourism-related economic activity New York States Canal system contributes to the upstate economy, said New York State Canal Corporation Director Brian U. Stratton.

Work will happen over the winter and will include a full width rehabilitation of the trail as well as the installation of new drainage.

During the process, the Canalway Trail will be used as construction access to the work area and will be closed to the public between Cobbs Lane and Main Street. A detour is in place.

After the canal wall reconstruction is finished, the Erie Canalway Trail between North Main Street and Cobbs Lane will be resurfaced with new asphalt.

The project will be complete by the spring of 2014.
