Kwanzaa co-founder shares inspiration for holiday

Rochester, N.Y. - What better way to celebrate the spirit of Kwanzaa than to hear from the man who helped to create the holiday?

Dr. Maulana Karenga visited Rochester Sunday afternoon and shared some words of inspiration at the Memorial Art Gallery.

Dr. Karenga spoke about the holiday, arguing that the message of Kwanzaa is often overlooked.

"Kwanzaa is a celebration of a people," Dr. Maulana said. "And sometimes I'm not sure the media captures that. The media likes the spectacle, it likes the dance, the music. But above all, Wwanzaa is a celebration of family, community and culture and all of those are linked."

Kwanzaa was first celebrated in 1966.

The holiday lasts seven days and continues through January 1, 2014.
