Rochester Fire Chief leaving the department

by Alexis Arnold

Mayor-Elect Lovely Warren announced the members of her transition team today.

One person who wont be staying on is Rochesters Fire Chief Salvatore Mitrano. Mitrano told 13WHAM that he knew changes had to come but was hoping for the chance to serve the community.

At a press conference Friday, he was direct and straight to the point.

I was informed yesterday by the Mayor elect that I would not be part of her management team in the next administration, said Mitrano.

Mitrano has been with the department for 26 and a half years and just took the reigns as chief almost a year ago.

I'd like to say a special thank you to Mayor Thomas Richards for his faith in me to do this job, said Mitrano. To be the chief of this department having served as many years as I did as a firefighter working my way through all of the ranks and to get the support of the members that I got, probably one of the most proudest things that happened to me. A lot of changes had been coming down in the last few days, so we were surprised but not totally surprised.

While its still unclear who will be the new leader of the department, Mitrano and fellow colleagues remain optimistic about the future.

I think change is hard but change also brings opportunities, said Mitrano. So we'll make the best of it and we'll go on. The men and women of this department will do their job day in and day out, regardless of who's at the top of the chain.

Leonard Redon will serve as Deputy Mayor, Jeremy Cooney will be her Chief of Staff, and Christine Christopher will serve as her Director of Communications.
