Warren, lawmakers push for paid family leave

Rochester, N.Y. - A trio of New York State's most powerful women are championing legislation that would create paid family and medical leave.

U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren, and Congresswoman Louise Slaughter said the FAMILY Act (Family and Medical Insurance Leave) would establish a national paid family and medical leave insurance program.

A statement released by the three says the act would "ensure that American workers would no longer have to choose between a paycheck and caring for themselves or a family member."

Warren said the act will provide partial wage replacement "thus alleviating the most common reason workers give for not taking FMLA leave when they need it."
