Suicide rate among young vets spikes

Washington (AP) -- The doctor who oversees suicide prevention efforts for the Department of Veterans Affairs said the latest data shows an alarmingly sharp increase in the suicide rate among the youngest male veterans.

The department said the suicide rate for male veterans between ages 18-29 increased nearly 44 percent from 2009 to 2011.

Dr. Jan Kemp said too many younger veterans getting care for physical wounds are not seeking treatment for mental health issues.
