Water tests encouraging after chemical spill

Charleston, W.Va. (AP) -- Many schools, restaurants and other businesses in West Virginia will be closed Monday because of the lack of clean tap water, but Gov. Earl Tomblin says all state offices will be open.

Hundreds of thousands of people are entering their fifth day without water to drink, bathe in or cook with because of a chemical spill Thursday in the Elk River at Charleston.

The governor says water tests are encouraging but hasn't given a timetable for when people might be able to use the water again. But Maj. Gen. James Hoyer of the West Virginia National Guard did say on Sunday that testing near the water treatment facility has consistently been below 1 part per million.

That's a key step officials needed so that they can begin the next step of flushing the system.
