Martin Luther King Jr. holiday starts in NYC

New York (AP) - Gov. Andrew Cuomo kicked off the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend with a speech at Al Sharpton's headquarters in Harlem.

In his brief Saturday appearance at the National Action Network meeting hall, Cuomo talked about his initiatives in education, criminal justice policy and gun control.

He also warmly recalled being invited by Coretta Scott King to deliver an address at the slain civil rights leader's former Atlanta church on Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 1999.

Cuomo was the U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development at the time.
