Weather leaves one family stranded

Rochester, N.Y.-- The Bhandari family was supposed to fly home to Tucson Monday, but their flight was cancelled. They had nowhere to go so the family spent the night at the airport. Tuesday they learned they couldnt get a flight out until Friday. But the family, which includes three children, had no money, no food and no place to go.

When American Eagle airline employees heard the story, they bought the family food. Then they called the Red Cross. A shuttle arrived at the airport to pick up the family and take them to a hotel. There they would have a warm place to stay and food.

Daughter Sarmina Bhandari said her family was grateful to everyone who helped them.  Shuttle driver Porfirio Mercado picked the family up from the airport but had no idea what they had been through until we told him.

He said he felt like he had helped them and told us: thats a beautiful thing.

Red Cross Communications Director Jay Bonafede told 13 WHAM News that people in Rochester are always willing to help one another.

Bonafede said the Red Cross always helps people in need, something they wouldnt be able to do without help and donations from the community.

People are really good at heart, they dont want to see someone stranded, so theyre going to help, Bonafede said.

The family hopes to get a flight back home Friday. The Red Cross said it will check back with the family to see what other help they may need.
