Flu cases on the rise in Monroe County
Rochester, N.Y. -- There have been 90 confirmed cases of the flu in Monroe County, but the Health Department warns that the numbers are likely much higher than that since most people are not tested.
The concern with this year's flu is that it is the H1N1 strain that caused a lot of illnesses and deaths in 2009. The difference is, it is included in the flu vaccine.
Doctors are urging people to get that flu shot so they don't get sick or spread the virus to others.
We are definitely in flu season, said dr. Michael Kamali, URMC Chairman of Emergency Medicine. We don't think it's peaking yet...definitely get your flu shot. It is still effective and it works.
Doctors also remind us that simple things like hand washing and covering your mouth when you cough or sneeze can prevent spread of the flu virus.
They say the supply of the vaccine is adequate and there is still time to get it.
