Casino conversation advances in Henrietta

HENRIETTA, N.Y. The Seneca Nation of Indians visited the Town of Henrietta Thursday for a meet and greet according to Town Supervisor Jack Moore.

Moore told 13WHAM no decisions or proposals have been made, but Seneca Nation did tell Moore that they want to build a casino in Henrietta.

Well it scares me, said Linda Traynor of Henrietta. Ive lived here for over 50 years and this is my hometown.

With recent talks of a potential casino coming to town, she and other opponents are afraid Henrietta is headed in the wrong direction.

Another long-time resident, Bob Spring, who also teaches at the Rochester Institute of Technology said, It sends the wrong message to people. Its just too easy to lose your money that way, and too easy to get into bad habits especially when theres something within driving distance.

On the other hand, supporters like the idea of a casino in town, especially if it puts extra tax dollars into the local economy.

People, theyre going to gamble anyway, said Tony Hockenberry of Henrietta. Just like the Finger Lakes, they go crazy over there. I think it would be good.

Moore also told 13WHAM that Seneca Nation has gotten approval from the governor to build one more casino west of Route 14.
