More visits to the ER because of extreme cold weather

Rochester, N.Y. - Some area hospitals like Unity are seeing more people in the emergency room because of injuries due to the sub-zero weather.

Dr. Dustin Riccio, Director of Emergency Services, told 13WHAM News that they are treating more respiratory illnesses because of the cold temperatures and seeing more people with broken bones who have fallen on icy sidewalks or streets.

Dr. Riccio said while they arent seeing an increase in frostbite or exposure cases,  it is important for people to limit the amount of time they spend outside and bundle up.

He said it doesnt take long for frostbite or exposure to set in, especially for the very young and older folks.

Tingling in your feet and hands is a sign that you need to head inside.
