Community remembers "dog whisperer"
Typically, a happy and energetic dog, Lucy stared out the front window and ignored the people and dogs around her.
The 7-year-old Springer Spaniel lost her owner, her best friend, Steve Hanna in a car crash Friday morning.
She's just traumatized, she was there and she lost her love, her companion, her buddy-so it's just been really hard. Alysa Plummer, a good friend, said no one was closer to Hanna than his dog Lucy.
Oh, he loved her, she was just always with him, everywhere, said Plummer. You'd see Steve driving his little doggie mobile around town and you'd see Lucy right there with him in the car.
Just like always, Lucy was in the passenger seat as Hanna drove to Walworth to pick up a dog for a new client. It was a really good time in his life, things were opening up for him so thats what makes it ever more sad, Plummer said. He had so much in front of him.
Last year, Hanna made his side business a full time job, walking and watching peoples pets and quickly became known as the Pittsford Dog Whisperer.
Neighbor Matthew Warren said, He just loved those dogs, they were his life and he dedicated everything to them. He'd do anything for those dogs and it's just sad to see he's not going to be around anymore for that.
At the intersection of Lincoln Road and Atlantic Avenue, witnesses said Hanna stopped at the stop sign, went through the intersection and then backed up into the path of a tractor trailer.
Plummer said, Maybe realized he should have made a turn and thought he could just quickly reroute his car.
The 59-year-old was killed on impact. Everybody was just devastated, its just unbelievable we still just cant quite fathom it, said Plummer.
A fixture in the community, Hanna was a good friend to both people and animals who is already greatly missed.
He was such a gentle spirit and I think everyone that knew him was glad to have known him for his time on the planet-just a lovely soul and a good friend.
Even though Lucy seems to know Hanna is not coming home, she continued to sit in front of the door and wait. She was just his constant companion, Pummer said. I know she desperately misses Steve.
