Teacher sentenced for sexually abusing student

Rochester, N.Y. - A former gym teacher in the Rochester City School District was sentenced to four years in prison Tuesday for sexually abusing one of his students who was only eight-years-old.

Matthew Lomaglio was a teacher at School Number 19.

After he was found guilty, Lomaglio admitted to sexually abusing the victim who was in the second grade.

Prosecutors say the abuse happened multiple times between 2006 and 2007, until the victim's mother pulled him out of school.

"His mother has a great deal of pain knowing that she was there, knew something was wrong, but could not put her finger on it because kids just don't want to talk about this sort of thing, especially when it's someone who's an authority figure, like a teacher, said Kyle Rossi, Assistant District Attorney.

More than 20 teachers wrote letters of support for the gym teacher.

Lomaglio must also register as a sex offender for ten years.
