25 NYS athletes heading to Winter Games

Albany, N.Y. (AP) -- More than two dozen New York state residents will be with the U.S. Olympic team competing at the Winter Olympics and Paralympics in Sochi, Russia starting next week.

The athletes and coaches include 22 from the Empire State heading to the Winter Games starting on Feb. 6 and another three who will compete at the Paralympic Games beginning March 7.

Four are members of the New York Army National Guard: bobsledders Nicholas Cunningham and Justin Olsen, and luge team member Matthew Mortensen and luge coach William Tavares.

Olsen was a member of the U.S. Bobsled that won the gold medal at the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver.

The U.S. men's hockey team has six New York state residents, including NHL stars Patrick Kane of Buffalo and Hilton High School grad Ryan Callahan.
