Bishop set to be installed

Rochester, N.Y. -- It was a moment local church leaders said theyve been waiting for since Bishop Matthew Clark announced his retirement in July 2012.

Bishop-Designate Salvatore Matano knocked three times on the doors of Sacred Heart Cathedral Thursday night, one day prior to his formal installation as bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rochester. That ritual hadnt been performed in Rochester since Clarks installation in 1979.

Once a prayer Mass began Thursday night, Matano told jokes to a crowd of about 800, but also thanked now-Bishop Emeritus Clark and said hes ready to take on his new mission and lead the thousands of Catholics in the Rochester area.

Haven't these been a very difficult last few years for all of us? Nonetheless, we have put our hand to the plow and we continue to go forward," said Matano, former bishop of the diocese of Burlington, Vt. May God truly bless us as I begin a new mission in service to you.

You can watch Matanos installation live Friday afternoon on 13WHAM.com.
