RPD "appalled" by viral punch video

Rochester, N.Y. - The Rochester Police Department is investigating what appears to be a young man slamming a snowball into the face of an unsuspecting store customer - an incident that was videotaped and put online.

The incident in question happened outside of what looks like the A&Z Market at the corner of Jay and Child Streets.

A young man is talking to the camera when, moments later, an elderly woman walks out, and the man hits her in the face from behind with a snowball in hand.

This is the statement issued by the police Wednesday afternoon:

As an organization, RPD was appalled by the behavior depicted on the video. Although the victim never contacted the police regarding this incident, RPD immediately and proactively commenced an investigation as soon as we became aware of the video. Our investigation continues, and we are working cooperatively with the Monroe County District Attorney's Office, and the Monroe County Probation Department, to pursue all possible avenues to address this event.

The RPD went on to say that it shares the same concerns regarding the video and the act as the community - and that officers will release more information as it becomes available through the investigation.
