Zagari accused in attempted bank robbery

Man accused in Wednesday's incident near Pittsford Plaza is also suspect in attempted bank robbery case

Spencerport, N.Y. The man shot by a Monroe County Sheriffs deputy in Pittsford Wednesday is suspected of attempting to rob a bank in Spencerport a day earlier.

Ogdens Police Chief told 13WHAM News Vincenzo Zagari, 22, is a person of interest in an attempted robbery at the M&T bank in Slayton Place Tuesday afternoon.

Police said the suspect entered bank around 4 p.m. threatened staff, brandished a gun, and then fled with no money.

Police said the suspect was wearing a wig at the time.

Ogden Police had been waiting to interview Zagari at Monroe County Probation on Wednesday when the shooting in Pittsford took place.

At a press conference Thursday, Monroe County Sheriff Patrick OFlynn said Zagari shoplifted from the Wegmans in Pittsford Plaza Wednesday afternoon. Investigators say he crashed a stolen car in the parking lot and then tried to carjack a woman. Police said Zagari was confronted by Deputy Bridget Davis across the street at M&T bank on Monroe Avenue. OFlynn said Zagari attempted to strike Davis with a hammer. After Davis swatted it away, Zagari is accused of pointing a gun at Davis, which prompted Davis to draw her own gun. She fired, hitting Zagari in the hand and chest. O'Flynn said the gun Zagari drew was a pellet gun.

Zagari remains in guarded condition at Strong Memorial Hospital.
