Buffalo Catholic diocese closing 10 schools
Buffalo, N.Y. (AP) -- The Diocese of Buffalo said it will close 10 suburban elementary schools as part of the church's restructuring plan aimed at boosting enrollment at its other Catholic schools.
Bishop Richard Malone announced Wednesday that all Catholic elementary schools in the city of Buffalo will remain open, while 10 elementary schools outside the city will close in June. He said the move will allow the diocese to strengthen its 42 other Catholic elementary schools.
The schools being closed are in Elma, West Seneca, Lancaster, Orchard Park, the City of Tonawanda, Gowanda, Amherst and Hamburg. The closings affect more than 1,150 students and nearly 200 teachers and staff.
The Buffalo diocese also runs 15 Catholic high schools. The diocese covers eight Western New York counties, where it has more than 160 parishes.
