Pro golfer from Spencerport killed in crash

Montgomery, Ala. Officials say former Rochester area resident and LPGA pro golfer, Danielle Downey, 33, was killed in a car crash Thursday night.

Police said Downey lost control of her car around 10 p.m., overturned several times and was ejected from her vehicle.

They said EMTs determined her injuries were too severe for airlift, so she was rushed to a hospital by ambulancebut the efforts to save her were unsuccessful and she was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Downey played at Auburn from 1999-2003, earning All-America honors in 2000, 2002 and 2003. She was All-SEC all four years; earning first-team honors three times, and was the 2000 SEC Tournament champion. She also led Auburn to SEC team championships in 2000 and 2003.

During the 2012-13 season, Downey took the place of head coach Kim Evans, who had been diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Under her guidance the team earned a place in the NCAA Championship, where Auburn took 6, the team's best finish at the tournament in 8 years.


Downey was serving as the Director of Operations for Auburn University.
