NY proposes boat-cleaning rules to stop invasives
Albany, N.Y. (AP) - New York regulators want to require boaters to make sure their motorboats, canoes and kayaks are free of hitchhiking invasive species before launching them in the state's waterways.
The state Department of Environmental Conservation proposed rules Wednesday that would subject people to fines if they don't clean and drain their boats and boat trailers before launching. The rules would apply to all boats launched at DEC boat launches, waterway access sites, fishing access sites and campgrounds administered by DEC.
Violators could be ticketed and fined up to $250.
The regulations add teeth to guidelines the agency has promoted for many years to stop spread of zebra mussels, Eurasian watermilfoil and other damaging non-native species.
Comments on the new regulations are being accepted by DEC through Feb. 24.
