Salvatore Matano takes over as bishop

Rochester, N.Y. - For the first time in more than 30 years, Rochester has a new bishop.

Bishop Salvatore Matano was appointed at the Installment Mass Friday afternoon at Sacred Heart Cathedral.

Hundreds came out for the ceremony, a tradition that Rochester has not seen since 1979.

"We have an extraordinary potential to march into the future of hope and joy under the cross," said Matano regarding one of his biggest challenges - bringing people back to the church who have rejected it.

Matano comes from Burlington, Vermont and he succeeds the now-retired Matthew Clark, who was bishop for 33 years.

In a touching moment during the mass, the congregation honored Clark with a round of applause after Matano thank him for his service and called him an "icon of stability."
