Study: Steroid use higher among gay teen boys

Chicago (AP) -- Researchers said gay and bisexual teen boys use illicit steroids at a rate almost six times higher than straight kids do.

Reasons for the differences are unclear. The study, in Monday's journal Pediatrics, looked at more than 17,000 boys.

Four percent of the straight boys said they've used steroids, and 21 percent of the gay or bisexual teens said they did.

Dr. Rob Garofalo, adolescent medicine chief at Lurie Children's Hospital in Chicago, said the high rates are "shocking," but he notes gay teens often have body image issues.
