Two men busted for three bank robberies
Gates, N.Y. Two men arrested last week in Gates now face federal charges for at least three bank robberies in the area and a mother and daughters are credited for helping police catch these men.
Documents and police source detail how a mother and daughter followed the suspects vehicle into the city and gave police crucial information that appears to have closed several open cases.
That robbery happened just before 5 p.m. at the First Niagara Bank on Spencerport Road in Gates. Christopher Mancuso and Jeffery Schmitt were in custody by 7:30 p.m. that night.
Mancuso and Schmitt face federal bank robbery charges that carry much stiffer sentences. Court documents show how friends and relatives of each of the men helped link Mancuso and Schmitt to two other bank robberies.
Chase Bank on Dewey Avenue in Greece was robbed on January 17. Authorities claim Jeffery Schmitt identified himself when showed photos from the robbery. He also identified himself when showed photos from a robbery in December of a Chase Bank on Lake Avenue.
Investigators claim Christopher Mancuso admitted to being the getaway driver in at least two of these robberies.
Mancuso was released from state prison months ago and parole officers place him outside the Gates Bank at the time of the robbery thanks to a GPS tracking device on his ankle.
Federal court papers state that the GPS device was attached to Mancusos ankle just two days before the bank robbery in Gates. The robbery that, thanks to an alert mother and daughter, landed Mancuso back behind bars.
