Cuomo defends college for inmates

by Sean Carroll

Rochester, N.Y. --- Governor Andrew Cuomos recent proposal to fund more college and educational services for prison inmates is being met by backlash from many in this region.

If comments on social media are any indication, many people are against spending taxpayer dollars on this proposal.  Folks are also saying theyre opposed to the idea when many students and families are struggling to pay down college debt or save up for college tuition.

On Thursday, Governor Andrew Cuomo responded to those critics in the following way:

"It will save them (families) money, the Governor said.  A person who is paying to put their kid through college, they understand how expensive college is and then they have to pay this state's taxes on top of it."

"So we keep a person in a prison cell for $60,000 a year, Gov. Cuomo continued.  We release them (and) half of them come back for another $60,000 a year.  It costs about $5,000 a year to provide educational services to that person in prison the recidivism rate goes from about half to about 4%  If you were just doing this on the numbers, as a conservative, and you said I want to save money this is a great investment to save tax dollars."

So if you want to say forget the compassionate, forget assisting the person in their life, the Governor said to critics.  Just on the dollars and cents its a smart investment if you want to save money."
