People eager for "new" Midtown

Rochester, N.Y.--Gladys Smith doesn't mind the trek to Greece or Henrietta to shop at a mall, but if Midtown becomes a shopping center yet again, she'll be among the first in line.

"Hopefully the developers come through," said Smith.

Developer Larry Glazer said Tops Friendly Markets, a movie theater chain, restaurants and clothing shops are among the businesses interested in Midtown.

"People are looking for things to do and why not come downtown rather than out to the suburbs," said Christian Valentino, an attorney who works downtown.

Glazer said he's awaiting permits for the future Midtown projects and is planning to break ground by  spring. The construction is expected to be completed by 2015, said Glazer.
