Whittemore tapes expected Friday

Rochester, N.Y. -- A videotaped interview between investigators and a man accused of murdering his girlfriend at the College at Brockport in 2012 is expected to be released for the first time Friday.

Clayton Whittemore is accused of beating his girlfriend, Alexandra Kogut, to death in her Brockport dorm room Sept. 29, 2012. His trial is scheduled for later this year.

13WHAMs Sean Carroll teamed up with representatives from four other Rochester media outlets to hire a lawyer and compel a judge to release evidence that was part of an open-court proceeding last year.

The judge agreed Thursday to release the recordings, admitting they are public records.

Whittemore allegedly admitted to the crime in the interviews, which may also offer clues to why he did it. His lawyer opposed the release of the tapes for fear of a tainted jury pool.

The tapes could be released as soon as Friday morning. Other 911 recordings that include Whittemore speaking about the crime to dispatchers could be released later this month.
